Boost for boiler industry

Funding to upgrade inefficient boilers has been introduced by the Government, promising to cut carbon, save money on fuel bills and sustain work for the heating industry.

Up to 125,000 households in England with working G-rated boilers are eligible to apply for a £400 discount off the price of an A-rated boiler or a renewable heating system such as a biomass boiler or heat pump. The scheme has already triggered some companies to add to the offer and it is expected others will follow suit. According to the HHIC (Heating and Hot Water Industry Council), the average cost of a boiler and installation is £2500.

Energy and climate change secretary Ed Miliband claims the scheme could help reduce annual energy bills by £200 to £235 per household. Fraser Winterbottom, chief operating officer at Energy Saving Trust, which is operating the voucher scheme, commented: "We know that people will act on larger energy efficiency measures like replacing boilers when they are both good for the environment and cost effective for them. They also need to be able to trust the claims that are made around energy efficiency measures. The Energy Saving Trust is impartial, can provide this assurance, and can provide information to help people assess whether their boilers are eligible."

Online campaign
The campaign for a boiler scrappage scheme was started by Mick Williams, MD of Williams & Co plumbers' merchant, who launched the Reheat Britain website and encouraged thousands of people to sign the petition calling for Government funding. He said: "We set up Reheat Britain to help householders and small businesses as well as the environment, so we’re very pleased the Government has listened to our arguments and launched the scheme quickly, and that they have kept the details of the scheme plain and simple.

"Providing online vouchers for the boiler scrappage incentive makes it simple for householders to claim, and the fact that any Gas Safe registered engineer can do the work means that many struggling small businesses can benefit from the scheme too.

“However, devolution means that the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish governments need to act separately to bring in their own boiler scrappage schemes. I hate to think that people in these countries will be missing out on the lower bills, greener homes and economic help that England is getting."
