The 17th-Century Broughton-in-Furness building was originally a farm house and its position right in the middle of a national park – and an area of outstanding natural beauty – meant the solar thermal panels couldn’t be installed on the roof. Instead, the solar array has been installed on an A-frame with a fence surrounding it, to keep the conservation officer happy as well as providing hot water for the hotel guests and pub customers.
The High Cross Inn has been a pub since 1810 and welcomes around 2,000 visitors every year to its six bedrooms, restaurant and bar, so its heating and hot water costs were very high.
In August 2011 the owner, Angela Anthonisz, chose Biasi to give the building’s heating system an overhaul. Mike Hook, technical manager, explains: “All the difficulties of an old heating system were overcome and if it works here, it’ll work anywhere.” The products chosen were two ActivA system boilers, four solar thermal panels, a 300-litre solar cylinder and a 300-litre indirect cylinder.
In addition, the High Cross Inn has a HeatGenie system installed, which provides control and zoning. Hook says: “The HeatGenie makes complying with Part L and zoning easier as it becomes the heart of the installation. It makes subzoning and mixing technologies a breeze.” The building is divided into zones and each one is controlled individually, which means that each has its own programme of temperature and timing to suit the needs of that area of the hotel, whether that’s the bedrooms, restaurant or kitchen area.
Already Angela Anthonisz is seeing the difference and saving around £250 per month on energy bills.
Heat Genie:
- Provides an easy way to control time & temperature in different rooms
- Provides a solution for combining different heat sources
- Eliminates the complexity of wiring heating systems
- Enables boiler array/cascading boilers
- The wiring centre is a pre-configured electronic wiring board, that connects the controls (clocks and thermostats), pumps and boilers together in a logical way
- Suitable for use with all heat sources.
- Works with most thermostats.
