The technology works by each slab moving 5mm with every footstep, which creates energy that is stored within the slab. The slab will then glow to indicate that energy has been generated, which uses up just 5% of the energy created. The remaining energy can be used for applications such as street lighting.
Pavegen was one of twenty products on display that creatively address the carbon reduction challenge. A panel of industry experts selected the finalists from a total of 40 entries in the competition run by the Modern Built Environment Knowledge Transfer Network (MBEKTN) in 2009.
