Lafarge will reward innovation related to producing sustainable building materials in its Invention Awards that opened last month. Looking at aggregates, cement, concrete and gypsum, the awards are open to researchers, entrepreneurs, inventors and academics across Europe. Entries can be new construction methods, products or industrial processes, either at the idea stage or produced in the last five years.
Pascal Casanova, Lafarge's director of R&D, said: "We devote more than 50% of our annual research budget to sustainable construction, working on issues such as carbon footprint reduction, energy efficiency, more efficient use of natural resources and building systems. We have a long history of working in partnership with outside experts on these subjects, as we need to draw on all available expertise."
The competition is open until 15th October and the three winners will receive support to set up their idea, as well as €20,000. Winners will be announced in January 2011.
