The North West Construction Knowledge Hub (NWCKH) will be exhibiting on stand F3 at Greenbuild Expo 2011 on Wednesday 29th and Thursday 30th June. The NWCKH stand will offer free seminars on a range of topics to include retrofit, lean construction and the government’s construction strategy for 2011, along with a chance to speak with key advisors in the construction sector.

The NWCKH, led by the Centre for Construction Innovation and the University of Salford, is a £6m initiative to provide free advice to small and medium-sized construction companies about reducing their carbon emissions, creating jobs and reducing waste. Partners include BRE, University of Central Lancashire, University of Liverpool and Urban Vision, with funding from the European Regional Development Fund and the Northwest Regional Development Agency.

Each free seminar will run for 30 to 60 minutes on the NWCKH stand with plenty of opportunity for discussion. There is no need to pre-book, simply arrive 10 minutes before the start time and take your seat.

Government Construction Strategy 2011
Prof Peter McDermott & Mike Dickinson, Centre for Construction Innovation & The Salford Centre for Research and Innovation, University of Salford
On the 31st May 2011 the government issued a new construction strategy that highlighted the need for reform of public sector construction procurement to improve value for money to taxpayers and enable the construction industry to focus on bringing forward innovative solutions. This seminar provides an overview of the measures government will take to reform the way in which it procures construction and emphasises the responses required from industry to enable growth and sustainability across the construction sector.

Return of Constructing Excellence Demonstration Projects to the North West
Roy Stewart, Centre for Construction Innovation, University of Salford
The Constructing Excellence Demonstration programme was a recommendation of Sir John Egan’s report ‘Rethinking Construction’ and is an excellent vehicle for the capture and dissemination of best practice knowledge in the built environment sector. Demonstration projects are live construction projects that are innovating or applying an element of best practice that lead to a step-change in project performance for the participating organisations. Come and see what Demonstration projects are about and how you could be part of demonstrating the best that construction has to offer.

Innovation in the Retrofit of UK Housing
Prof Carl Abbott & Dr. Will Swan, The Salford Centre for Research and Innovation, University of Salford
Prof Carl Abbott & Dr. Will Swan will present an overview of low energy retrofit of UK housing. Examples of good practice will be given taken from the University of Salford's current research which includes a comparative study of retrofit with Finland, two Knowledge Transfer Partnerships and the University's Energy House. The innovations highlighted will encompass: Finance, technology, process & people from pre-construction through to use.

Embracing Business and Equality and Diversity in the Built Environment
Dr. Lisa Worrall, Centre for Construction Innovation, University of Salford
Adapting the built environment to Equality and Diversity is likely to become a greater priority in the foreseeable future. The cumulative impact of the Single Equality Act (2010), Single Equality Duty (2011) and Localism Bill (2010) will mean that organisations will need to become increasingly transparent in how they recruit, train and progress their workforce. This transparency will impact upon what differing clients will ask for and therefore, any business savvy organisation will need to rapidly get up to speed on areas of their evidence gathering for local end users as well as meeting new requirements in procurement processes.

13:30
Lean Construction
Tony Baldwinson, NW Construction Knowledge Hub, University of Salford
Lean construction helps your firm minimise costs in materials, time, and work done, while maximising the value for which you get paid.  We know that Lean Construction is different to lean manufacturing, and we know that “whole life value” is what clients demand.  This presentation looks at what all this adds up to for a small firm in construction. Is it as some would say - “work collaboratively and keep your promises”? Come and find out.
