A retrofit project carried out by a housing association in the Midlands has been awarded SuperHome status by the Sustainable Energy Academy.

Orbit Heart of England's retrofit project, of a Victorian home in Foleshill Road, Coventry, is now part of the SuperHome network of exemplar houses after a refurbishment showed a massive 79% reduction in carbon emissions. The house is part of a pilot project to use Passivhaus design principles and technology to lower energy consumption in older homes.

Large amounts of internal wall insulation has been fitted inside the house, along with an airtight membrane, providing a thermal barrier to drastically reduce the amount of heat lost through the walls, floors and ceilings. The insulation had to be applied inside as the outer appearance of the house couldn’t be changed.

Further boosting the house’s ability to stay warm inside, high performance external doors, triple glazed windows, heat recovery ventilation system, solar photovoltaic panels, insulated timber floors and an insulated roof covered with new slate tiles have been installed. The house was also converted from two to three bedrooms, meeting local housing needs.

John Barnham, head of sustainableinvestment at Orbit Heart of England, said: “We’re delighted with the results at Foleshill Road. This is strong evidence that our investment in energy-efficient Passivhaus housing for both retrofit and new build can deliver significant savings in terms of reduced carbon and energy costs for residents. We have also gained valuable knowledge and evidence in developing cost viable solutions in refurbishment of existing homes.”
