Energy secretary Ed Davey was in Birmingham last week visiting a Community Energy Saving Programme (CESP) scheme being rolled out by British Gas and Birmingham City Council.

One resident, Kevin Thornton, whose home has received internal and external wall insulation through the programme, said: “The house is cooler in the warm weather and warmer when it is cold and it also looks top dog! The work has been finished a week and people who are just passing by comment on how nice my house looks.”

Jon Kimber, MD of British Gas New Energy, said: "Residents can expect a real transformation over the coming months. The partnership is investing substantially to improve homes in the area, installing an insulated cladding render which will give homes a fresh new appearance whilst also making them warmer. Coupled with the new gas heating systems being installed these improvements will make a real difference, making homes more energy efficient, more comfortable to live in and potentially lowering heating bills significantly.”

CESP is a £350 initiative which will see 90,000 homes across England, Wales and Scotland, such as these in Birmingham, receive whole house energy makeovers to save around £300 per year on fuel bills.
