Approximately 22m UK residents do not know what an energy performance certificate (EPC) is.

A legally required document which allows homeowners and tenants to understand their energy outgoings and evaluate the energy efficiency of the property in which they reside, an EPC is a valuable tool in the current climate.

Research findings from The Green Home Company show that those aged 18-24 and 35-44 are least likely to know what an EPC is with just 50% able to say they know what the document is for. People aged 25-34 are most likely to know what an EPC is but only by a very small margin of 1%. Regionally, the Scots are in the dark while those in Wales and the South West are more likely to be aware.

John Benner, managing director at The Green Home Company, said: “The fact that every other person in Britain is unaware of what an EPC is hugely worrying given it plays such an important part in telling us how energy efficient our homes are and therefore, acts as an indicator of where cost savings can be made.”
