Two schools in County Durham have won solar photovoltaic systems from Sanyo.
Both systems were awarded to the schools by SANYO HIT, which is part of the Panasonic Group, for their work in the Future Planets project, part of an education programme called Recharging the Earth. This involved pupils creating a piece of work exploring the state of the planet in 25 years time – if sustainable and non- sustainable choices are made. It aimed to develop an understanding and awareness of living a sustainable lifestyle.
Catherine Johns, director of innovation development at County Durham Development Company, commented: “The Recharging the Earth programme was designed to really engage with young people and get them excited about science and technology.”
The PV systems are now fully operational and providing clean, green energy to Rosa Street Primary School and Hamsterley Primary School.
Lynn Cowans, headteacher at Hamsterley Primary School, said: “As an eco school, our children are always looking for ways to reduce the carbon footprint of the school and their families. The Recharging the Earth project gave us the opportunity to showcase our eco school beliefs and the children and I are delighted to have had our prize of 14 solar panels commissioned.”
