A website explaining the renewable energy options for local authorities and communities is being developed by LDA Design. The design and energy practice has been appointed by Local Government Improvement and Development (formerly IDeA) to produce technology and introductory material for a web-based resource, which will be known as Compare Renewables.

The site will comprise factsheets and case studies on eight technologies: PV, district heating, combined heat and power, biomass, wind, hydro, heat pumps and energy from waste.  Each factsheet will explain the technology, how it works, what it looks like and what needs to be considered in terms of location, cost, output, economics and value. They will be comparable to help local authorities establish which technology solutions best suit their needs.

LG Improvement and Development is developing case study examples for each technology to show how local authorities, schools, and community groups have already achieved sustainable energy projects in their areas. The knowledge base also introduces good practice in planning and delivering sustainable energy technologies. There are estimates this work could save councils up to £350,000 by eliminating the need for individual councils to carry out this research locally.

LDA Design's director of sustainability and climate change, Rob Shaw, explained: “The quest for energy conservation and generation in our communities requires decisions about energy technologies that are informed and fully appraised.  This technology guide will help local authorities, communities and any other party which uses them to weigh up the pros and cons and make the best choice to ensure needs are met and savings made is achieved.

“Compare Renewables will also give local authorities much needed advice on what their role should be, and those of other project developers, in the planning and implementation of sustainable energy technologies.”
